Australia has around 800 species of bird, including about 400 endemic species. The wealth of bird life, from the boisterous laugh of the kookaburra - a large kingfisher, to the brilliantly plumed rainbow lorikeets, makes Australia a haven for bird lovers.

The largest bird is the flightless emu which stands nearly two metres tall, but Australian birds are more famous for their brilliant colours.

There are 55 species of parrots in Australia. An early map of Australia even suggests the Australian continent be called 'Terra psittacorum' meaning 'land of parrots'.

Australian birds can be found in all the country's habitiats from deserts to tropical rainforests. Some Australian birds are worth hundreds, even thousands of dollars overseas.
