With more than 100 beaches within an hours' drive from central Auckland, most beaches in Auckland are generally categorised by area, with Auckland's beaches known either simply as East, West, or North. The beaches close to Auckland city centre are the East Coast beaches located along Auckland's Tamaki Drive.
Waitemata Harbour has popular beaches at Mission Bay, Devonport, Takapuna, Long Bay, and Maraetai. The west coast has popular surf spots at Piha and Muriwai.
