    Coastline

Pancake RocksThe West Coast is a narrow coastal strip which runs parallel to the majestic Southern Alps which stretch 600 kilometres along the western edge of the South Island. The West Coast is a rugged, primeval region of contrasting features - high snow-capped mountains, ancient rainforests, river valleys, limestone landscapes, glaciers, lakes and dramatic coastlines. There are a total of five National Parks, with some of the parks making up a World Heritage area called South Westland.
