Much of New Zealand's native bush comprises of
temperate rainforest. These forests dominate the lowland areas of the both
islands. The other common type of forest in New Zealand is Beech
forest, which are common at higher altitudes and also found at low altitudes
in the southern regions of the South Island..
Fern trees are prolific in the rainforest, there are about 85 different species. The Silver Fern or otherwise known as the Ponga tree is one of New Zealand's national symbols and the Black Tree Fern is the highest in the world, reaching heights of 20 metres or more.
