Most New Zealand lakes are situated in the south
of New Zealand's South Island. The largest lake on this island is Lake Te
Anau (342 square kilometers/132 square miles). However, the largest lake in
New Zealand is situated in the central North Island, and is called Lake Taupo
(600 square kilometers). Lake Taupo is actually the crater of the worlds most
destructive volcano. The Rotorua area in the North Island also contains over
30 lakes, some of them have thermal activity such as steam rising from cliffs
that enclose those lakes. New Zealand's deepest lake is Lake Hauroko (462m).
