The Lindis Pass links
the Waitaki basin with Central Otago, following an old Maori trail well used
by Ngai Tahu. The first European to discover the pass was John Turnbull Thomson.
The saddle, which is between the valleys of the Lindis and Ahuriri Rivers, is at an altitude of 971 metres above sea level.
