    PictonThe main town in the Nelson region is Nelson. This town is very popular with travellers as it is the gateway to the many superb beaches on the northern coast and also provides access to the scenic Westcoast Region.

    Totaranui BeachTo the west of Nelson are 3 beautiful National Parks. The nearest and most popular, The Abel Tasman National Park is incredibly scenic and takes in the best coastal scenery New Zealand has to offer. There are many white and gold sandy beaches and coves which are hidden amongst the temperate rain forest and Tea trees.. The Abel Tasman Track is the main track through the park and is the most popular tramp (hike) in the country.

    Tonga BayKahurangi National Park is New Zealands second biggest park after Fiordland and is the newest addition to New Zealands superb network of National Parks. The park has beautiful coastal scenery from the wild west coast to Farewell Spit, a protected area of sand dunes. Much of this western coastline is populated by Nikau Palms which makes this temperate area look tropical. Nikau palms are the worlds most southerly Palm tree. Kahurangi National Park also contains the northern tip of the huge Southern Alps mountain range and has an extensive network of caves including the deepest cave in the southern hemisphere. So this park is quite diverse. The best way to see this park is to walk the Heaphy Track. This track takes over 4 days to complete and takes you through every type of terrain imaginable.

    Takaka HillFurther to the south and inland from Kahurangi lies Nelson Lakes National Park which has beautiful mountain and lake scenery with many walking tracks for all levels of fitness. Nearby is the Rainbow Ski field, the only area in the Nelson Region that has skiing facilities.
