Northland enjoys a subtropical climate. A typical
summer has long spells of sunshine, warm balmy evenings and runs from November
to early April. January and February are the hottest months.
The
climate is in synthesis with the many beautiful 
beaches especially the top of Northland
known simply as the 'Far North'. The Ninety Mile Beach, the longest beach in New Zealand covers the entire western
coast of teh Far North. This beach is made up of huge sand dunes and looks like the Sahara Desert
in places. Over on the east coast the coastline is indented with many idyllic
white sandy beaches and bays such as Spirits
Bay.
Further
south of the Far North and on the east coast, is one of New Zealand's
most popular tourist attractions, The Bay of Islands. Boat trips are available
from Paihia and Russell and will take you out to the 150 or so subtropical
islands in the area.
Waitangi township is also in this area and is steeped in New Zealand history as it is the home of the The Treaty of Waitangi, which is seen as the founding document of the nation.
Another major attraction in the Northland Region
are the Kauri Forests. These mighty trees rate amongst some of the biggest
and oldest trees in the world. These forests are located on the western side
of Northland aptly named the Kauri Coast.
